(1+ Yrs.)
When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters. When dogs are marked urgent, we could lose them at any time with little to no notice.

Alicia - sponsored for HW treatment
3/18/24 Intake: bulldog mix, 36 lbs, 5 yrs old, female, HW+, stray. Alicia was brought in by animal control from McCowans Millpond Road in Darlington. She came in malnourished and seems to have had many litters. She is such a sweet girl. She is heartworm positive.
Foster Update Nov 20, 2024: Alicia (also known as Bunny to us) is beautiful, sweet, very affectionate, and loves kids. She gets along great with our other dogs. She is calm and loves toys, bones, and any treats. She fetches, bringing the ball back, and can entertain herself. She is housebroken and keeps her crate very tidy. She sleeps through the night. She rarely barks. She rides good in the car. She walks on leash. We simply can't say enough good things about her. When meeting new dogs, she appreciates an introduction and then she builds a strong friendship with them. She is so loving with both her furfriends and her humans. She makes a wonderful companion and is very easy at 5-6 years old and around 55lbs. She warms our heart and has won over my husband with her cuteness. She’s low key with the cutest body language. She bows, hops, and drops onto her back for a belly rub (hence Bunny). She's just the perfect mix of EASY, silly, and loving. She is content to be in the same room on her dog bed or next to you on the couch. She’s a doll baby.

Amanda has been kenneled with several females, and she’s met several dogs in play groups. Very polite when meeting other dogs, she is calm and welcoming. Amanda walks okay on a leash and she was interested in helping Marlin walk along with her, going back to encourage him in a friendly manner. Arizona aka Bella - sponsored for adoption & rescue pull fees
4/8/24 Intake: terrier mix, 40 lbs, 10-11 mos old, female, HW-, stray. Arizona was brought in as a stray surrender. She was found off of Centerville Road in Hartsville. The guy who brought her in stated that he went to each neighbor that he lived near to ensure she wasn’t someone's family pet. Unfortunately, no one knew who she was. She did great for intake. She is heartworm negative.
Foster Update Sep 24, 2024: Arizona AKA Bella as her foster calls her is a 1 year young 40lb heart worm negative terrier mix. Bella is great with other dogs, happy and playful. Foster Mom sent us this fantastic update “Bella had a good week 1. She is sweet and smart. Potty training going great, sit, down and stay going well. Sit and down are strong. Walking on leash relaxed is solid, heeling needs some work (typical 1 year old ! So much to look at and smell). So loving. Watches me work from the dog bed most of the day but is up for a romp or a walk. She is careful and a good listener. Very responsive to praise and light correction. She is a good car rider, crate trained, quiet, and neat. Has some chewing desire, so she has a bone and a ball. Has adjusted to Merrick food one cup two times a day. She is such a little lady. This girl deserves someone who wants a snuggle buddy! She is so so good and precious. So hard to believe she was raised in the shelter because she is so good! She is going to make someone a wonderful cherished pet.
Foster Update Nov 27, 2024: Arizona aka Bella has had a good month developing her socialization skills with all. She is excellent on leash now and well behaved for food and with her foster brother eating together. She still chews a bit, but I redirect her to her bones and designated toys. She is a spoiled and loving companion pup.

Bobo - Sept 2023 Intake
9/12/23 Intake: terrier mix, 36 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Bobo came in with Leia. They were abandoned on Pinestraw in Hartsville.
Foster Update Feb 11, 2024: Bobo is currently in a foster home but would love his own family. I love my boy Bobo. He's the KING of zero accidents in the house. We're still working on leash training. He'd way rather do zoomies in the yard than walk on a leash, but he always comes back. He's super playful and loves playing with other dogs. I always try to give him lots of time to run in the yard, but he knows how to chill out on the couch, too. He plays nice with both my male and female dogs and does not exhibit any kind of resource guarding. He would be best paired with an active family and/or other younger, playful dogs. Sometimes he doesn't understand his size and probably would do better with older children. He already knows sit, down, and shake! He'll gladly show you for a treat, which he takes quite gently. Bobo is an easy foster who has never been destructive and knows how to preoccupy himself with a Buffalo horn or stuffed Kong.
Foster Update Jun 29, 2024: Update on Bobo since he's been in foster. He's less stressed, and he's been able to gain weight. He loves to play with friends and snuggle. He's hoping for an active family that can let him play often. He's a wonderful boy, and as his fosters, we love him dearly, but we want so much more for him. We want him to have the loving family of his dreams that will take him on adventures, even if that's just in the backyard to play frisbee or catch. He's a go with the flow kind of guy and appreciates every bit of kindness that is offered to him, and that's why we think he deserves the very best!

6/27/24 Intake: lab/shepherd mix, 48 lbs, 3 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Brice was brought in by animal control. He was found off of Underground Branch in Hartsville. He did well for intake.
More about Brice Nov 22, 2024: Brice is a handsome lab/shepherd mix available for rescue or adoption. He’s 2 years old, 48 lbs upon arrival, heart worm positive and neutered. He’s dog friendly and loves to play fetch. Brice arrived as a stray in June, wearing a leather collar, but no one came looking for him. Brice won over many volunteers with his nice manners and loving ways. He met male and female dogs very politely in play groups and kept his eyes towards his people with that "eager to please" way about him. Brice went out and about town during the Paws Around the Pee Dee event in late August, and his handler said “He is an absolutely amazing boy. He was excited to be out, loved the people he met, and wanted to go into every store. He kept wanting to see every kid and walked beside me.” Brice enjoyed his car ride and loved treats and playing with toys. He likes to snuggle and give kisses and is a calm, laid back boy with excellent leash skills. Ask for Brice today; he is hoping for a home soon!

More about Bunny Sep 20, 2024: Where are our black dog lovers? Bunny is a 2 year old, 41 lb, heart worm positive lab mix who has been waiting since April for a home. Bunny has met both male and female dogs in play groups. She seems to be more interested in people and playing ball with them then playing with her canine pals. Bunny loves her ball. She loves to run and fetch the ball. She’d love a home where she has lots of balls and a person to throw those balls, then get some love and affection. No cats for Bunny please; they are a bit too interesting. Sweet Bunny is a happy girl full of love and kisses. She is also a good sport and loves to dress up and smile for the camera. Foster Update Mar 23, 2023: She is crate trained and housebroken. She loves to play outside. She enjoys her toys. She doesn't bark very often at all except when she gets excited while playing or when her foster arrives home from work. She is good on leash. She rides good in the car. No cats please; she's too curious about them. While her current foster home has no other pets, Carmella does like other dogs. 6/24/24 Intake: terrier mix, 38 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW-, abandoned. Daphne was brought in as an abandoned stray by animal control from Candleberry Lane in Darlington. She did well for intake and is heartworm negative.
More about Daphne Nov 21, 2024: Daphne, cute, 1 year old 38lb, heart worm negative terrier mix is available for rescue or adoption. She arrived as a stray and must have had a home, because she had already been spayed. Daphne is just the cutest little girl with a very happy personality. She is eager to meet any dog or human and loves some pets and kind words when doing so. Daphne met several dogs in play groups. Volunteers said “she’s a rockstar” and made a great tester dog, because she read other dogs so well. She’s happy to play or hang out, depending on her doggy companion. She’s a nice size; not too big, not too little. Daphne would make a great companion dog, one to take a stroll or be your buddy and watch a show on a comfy couch. She veered away from cats when she walked by them on the way back to her run. Daphne is hoping to find a forever family soon, one that will cherish her. Deputy Dawg - May 2023 Intake
5/11/23 Intake: lab mix, no weight, 8 mos old, male, HW-, stray. Deputy Dawg got his name from the star-shaped white patch on his neck. He needs to get used to the leash.
*NEW * Foster Update Apr 17, 2024: Deputy Dawg arrived in May 2023 shy and skittish, and some new experiences at the shelter caused him anxiety. He is still a bit skittish around me. He is making improvements each week in my home, which is a good thing, and I'm very proud of him. He is food motivated and loves a treat. When he is outside, he may not necessarily come over when called, but he circles me and watches me. He doesn't get too far and enjoys hanging out among the other dogs. He gets along great with them. He observes everything they do and has learned so much from them. He is afraid of cats, so he doesn't bother them. When he is inside, he lays in my living room with the other dogs. I can get up and down, and he does not move anymore. This is really an accomplishment and great to see. When he is within arms reach of me while he snuggles with the dogs, I will also gently touch him, and he does not move. I love this. He is crate trained. I put him outside every few hours, and he has not had any accidents in the house. If I am not home, then he stays in his crate. Because of his skittishness/anxiety, he has a sensitive stomach, so I keep his meals consistent. He is a sweet boy, and he is what rescue is all about. He would need to be in a forever home with other dogs to continue to build his confidence and with a patient person that will love him at his pace.
