Adults R-Z

(1+ Yrs.)

When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters. When dogs are marked urgent, we could lose them at any time with little to no notice.

Raspberry

10/25/24 Intake: terrier mix, 46 lbs, 1.5 yrs old, female, HW+, abandoned. Raspberry came in with 2 adults, 3 puppies, plus a mom and newborn pups from Hartsville. The dogs were abandoned when the owner was evicted earlier this week. Raspberry walked on a leash. The staff thinks it's possible she is the mother to the Sx3 puppies that came in with this crew. Raspberry is heartworm positive.

Reid - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - $50 towards adoption or rescue pull fees

6/1/24 Intake: terrier mix, 47 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, stray. Reid was brought in as a stray surrender. They found the dog abandoned in Byrdtown. He did well for intake and walked well on a leash. Reid is heartworm positive.

More about Reid Oct 24, 2024: Reid, 1 year old, 47 lb, heart worm positive terrier mix was found abandoned by a Good Samaritan who kept him for a few weeks before bringing to the shelter. Reid was reported as being good with the kids before entering the shelter. Reid is a handsome guy who did very well with meeting other dogs, very polite with a quick sniff. Reid had the volunteers chuckling over his interest in the kiddie pool, wading and then dunking his head for a quick cool off. He enjoyed meeting the volunteers and ignored the cats when walking by them. He’s a cute boy who would make a great addition to any family. Our volunteer photographer noted “Sweet, little guy! I enjoyed spending time with him.” Reid is hoping you’ll want to spend time with him too; ask for him today.

Reneesme is a 3 year old, 65lb, terrier mix who is dog friendly and loves people. She has already been treated for heartworms! Reneesme is always smiling. And she enjoyed her time out in play groups meeting both male and female dogs. Liam, older teen pup, was wrestling and climbing on her back while Reneesme happily rolled and wrestled with him. She also enjoyed Autumn, meeting nicely and then going off leash to romp side by side. She enjoyed attention from the volunteers, smiling her entire time out in the play yard. Who needs a house hippo🦛? She’s the sweetest girl who hopes our bully lovers will want to take her home.

Ruby aka Judy - July 2022 Intake

7/28/22 Intake: terrier mix, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Previously lived inside with a chihuahua. Reportedly good with kids and other dogs. No cats for her please.

*NEW* Foster Update Mar 22, 2024: Ruby is a youthful, 4-5 year old, female Plott Hound/Lab mix. She was an owner surrender when her family had to relocate and could not take her with them. She was spayed prior to arrival and is heartworm negative. She is an athletic girl and loves to run and be with her person. She loves a good game of catch, but you must use two toys when you do. She also loves nothing more than a toy that squeaks! She has tested well with other dogs, but has shown me she is just as happy being on her own. She doesn't really engage in play with others, but is content sharing her space. She really prefers to be with her person. It sometimes takes her a moment to adjust with introductions with new people or new dogs. When I show her she is safe, she is fine. Cats are a definite no for this girl. She was in a home with a small chihuahua and I was told they got along well. She rides well in my car uncrated. She loves going for walks and does pretty well on the leash. She is very smart and doesn't miss much going on around her.  Sturdier children would probably be best for her, because she doesn't always realize her size. I want nothing more than a great home for her. She certainly deserves it, and I know she wants it for herself. She has a lot of love to give.

Sanford

7/2/24 Intake: boxer mix, 50 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Sanford was brought in as a stray by the Hartsville Fire Dept. Happy boy! Did well for intake.

More about Sanford Oct 14, 2024: Hello, my name is Sanford! I captured the heart of a volunteer who says I'm more than just a handsome face and that I deserve a second chance with a really special family. I used to have a home, but I couldn't stay there anymore. I miss having a family. So, my friend at the shelter helped me in her truck to go on a play date. When we got there, she said I made her very proud because even though I was nervous for a minute, I warmed up really quick and I made a lot of new friends. I met other boy dogs and girl dogs and even a tiny human who fed me his cookies! It was awesome, and everyone said I was really gentle. I was so sleepy on the ride back to my kennel that I fell asleep smiling with my head in her hand as she scratched my chin. She was so sad putting me back in my kennel, but I just thanked her for my fun day out with a little kiss and promised her I would keep being brave. You should know that I really like toys and I miss playing with them. I think kitties are cool, but they don't really like me chasing them so I probably wouldn't be a very good roommate for them. I'm about 2 and half years old and I weigh about 50 lbs. I like to take walks to stay in shape. If you're into labels, they say I'm an Am Staff/Boxer Mix, but I identify as a Carolina Couch Potato. I'm heartworm positive, but they told me that's treatable and my friends at the shelter can tell you about the options. Most importantly, daily snuggles and/or belly rubs are a necessity. I hope you ask about meeting me, and I can have another fun day out soon!

Smoke - Feb 2023 Intake - sponsored for rescue pull fees

2/27/23 Intake: 1 yr old, 55 lbs, terrier mix, male, HW+, owner surrender. Smoke was an owner surrender. Smoke is a VERY happy boy. He does walk well on a leash.

*NEW* Foster Update Apr 12, 2024: Don't let the adorable factor fool you – Smoke, a special 2-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, has a heart that shines brighter than the snow white "blaze" that adorns his face against his magnificent gray coat. While a neurological disorder gives him a unique, happy-go-lucky gait, Smoke's spirit is anything but unsteady. He delights in galloping across the yard, chasing toys, then enjoys a cuddle session on the couch. He doesn't mind sharing his space with other dogs and often looks to them to snuggle up, too, if they'll let him. Completely housebroken and crate-trained, Smoke adapts easily to his surroundings – a perfect quality for someone seeking a low-maintenance companion. Both of his fosters work full-time, and he has no issues waiting for them to get home without having any accidents. His wobbly walk might be his signature move, but Smoke's zest for life is what truly defines him. He's a dog who thrives on playtime, be it a rousing game of fetch or a refreshing dip in the kiddie pool! This charming dog with a heart of gold is ready to steal the heart of someone special – could it be you? Imagine the joy Smoke would bring to your life with his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty. We hope someone will choose him and love him the way the volunteers and his fosters have.

Vada

6/14/24 Intake: lab mix, 21 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW+, stray. Vada is a 1-year-old female lab mix who was brought in by animal control along with her brother Thomas from Auburn School Road in Darlington. Vada did well during intake. Vada is heartworm positive.

Foster Update Aug 9, 2024: Vada came to the shelter scared and shaking. She did not trust anyone. When she came to our home to weather the storm, I did not expect how quickly she would blossom! In just two days she went from hiding in a crate to coming up to people for pets and reassurance. She met cats and did not bother them, walked through the house alone exploring, and slept in her crate through the night. Though she gets nervous if someone hovers, she’ll allow us to pick her up and also pet her. Her favorite hobbies so far are running around the yard as fast as possible and laying in mud puddles to cool off! The hound/pointer instincts show in the way she poses while listening and as she discovers her voice! She has only whined when in a messy crate and when she was not ready to go in for the night. Vada is not yet house trained and is learning what a leash is for. She is nervous about new sounds and unexpected movements. She likes to follow people around the house but will lay down in the crate on her own when she’s overwhelmed. Miss Vada is a sweet, small sized dog who desperately wants to interact with people. She needs time to adjust but will make a great companion!

Wells - in foster to save his life but still URGENTLY needs adoption/rescue

10/6/23 Intake: shepherd mix, 19 lbs, 4 mos old, male, stray.

More about Wells Feb 29, 2024: Wells made the most of his time in play groups, meeting and playing with several dogs. Mr. Fun has a unique roll on his back play style, happy to wrestle and roll or romp and roll. This teen pup is eager to find a family to love and would love having a canine playmate. Wells had a great time meeting everyone at the Tractor Supply adoption event. Eager to meet people, his tail was constantly wagging, and he happily gave out kisses. In his foster home he enjoys snuggling with his foster or the resident doggies. Foster Mom said, “He is so happy and his tail is always wagging. He loves playing and hanging out with my dogs. He would love to be in an active house with other dogs and older kids to play with. He has not had any accidents in his crate. Super sweet boy.”

*NEW* Foster Update Oct 15, 2024: “Because I’m Happy”, that’s me, Wells!  Foster Mom says he’s the happiest dog in Darlington County.  Wells is a 15 month young, 45lb, heart worm negative lab/terrier mix, a dazzling, handsome brindle boy.  Mr Fun is super happy, and his tail is always wagging.  Wells is house trained, crate trained, walks great on a leash, enjoys squeaky toys and chew bones, is dog friendly and adores human attention and belly rubs.  Wells is a Velcro dog, he will keep you company in the kitchen while you do dishes and then when it’s TV time he’s right next to you for a good snuggle.  If he feels you’re not giving him enough “Well’s time” he will jump up and gently grab your arm to insist you stop and give him some love.  Experienced pet parents will understand he is not biting, just communicating his need for you, and calms down quickly.  Wells has lots of puppy energy, his perfect home would include another younger, playful dog to run, chase and burn off some energy.  Because of his youthful, playful nature no cats for Wells, no small children and he may not be a good fit for an elderly person.  If you have another dog looking for a playmate he’s your boy!

Here's an update, "Wilson is a very sweet boy. He is housebroken and he does well when crated. He’s settling in great; a little shy but he likes getting some love. He gets along with other dogs well and would probably prefer a home without cats." Wilson is super handsome at 2 years young, 56lbs and heartworm negative. Wilson's adoption fee is SPONSORED!
